Small Business photography

I love photographing entrepreneurs in their creative process and styling their product for simple, authentic images that sell.

Photography Tips for Small Businesses

1. Light: Light is the most important part of photography. When I am photographing product I make sure to turn off any artificial lights in my workspace and open all the blinds. I find a window with lots of light pouring in. If I am photographing a small product and the window doesn't go all the way to the floor I often times use a table or countertop to get my product closer to the light source.

2. Environment: There is a time and place for simply popping your product onto a white backdrop, this is helpful in some situations, however I try to get the product into an environment. People will resonate more with it and feel the need to buy if they can picture how they would use the product. Simple things like lighting the candles that you are photographing will make it feel real. Adding action such as pouring coffee into the mug you are photographing is the perfect touch.

A little bit about me...

I suppose it all started when I was a kid with a disposable camera. I took one with me everywhere to document our family’s adventures. In my high school photography class, I realized I not only had a passion for photography, but an eye for it too. I attended classes and conferences to hone my skills, but experience has been my greatest teacher.

One of my favorite things to do is take day trips around the Pacific Northwest to scout out spots for photo shoots. I love to make a day of it with my husband and my sweet little boy. If we can fit in a stop at a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, that is about as perfect as a day can get. It is so much fun to photograph individuals and families in the special spots I find.

I also enjoy shooting product photography for small businesses. I love the challenge of understanding the business’s style and brand, so I can create the perfect pictures of their products. I see it as an honor to help a small business succeed.

No matter what I’m photographing, I have discovered that I am most at peace when I am focused in on shooting. The rest of the world disappears, and all that matters is capturing the beauty of what is in front of me. I think that is a huge part of why I do what I do—it gets me outside of myself.
